In March of 161 AD, the Roman emperor Antoninus Pius died at the age of 74 at his villa near Rome, ending a 23-year long reign. Antoninus was a beloved emperor, and his rule was considered a golden age of prosperity and peace for the empire. To commemorate the deceased emperor, his heirs and successors, the emperors Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus minted a series of silver denarius coins featuring his portrait and proclaiming his deification as a god ("DIVUS ANTONINUS").

During his reign, Antoninus Pius focused on maintaining peace and stability throughout the Roman Empire. He worked to improve the infrastructure and economy of the empire, and he was known for his efforts to support education and the arts. Antoninus Pius continued his predecessor Hadrian's policies of consolidation and expansion, and he was successful in establishing peaceful relations with neighboring kingdoms and tribes.

He is particularly remembered for his successful campaigns in Britain, which helped to solidify Roman control over the island. Antoninus Pius was known for his just and humane approach to governance, and he was respected and loved by the people of Rome. He was also a patron of the arts and culture, and his reign saw the construction of a number of public buildings and monuments, including the Antonine Wall in Scotland.

Antoninus Pius died in 161 AD and was succeeded by his adopted sons, Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus.
